A Guide to Galvanizing

POST-GALVANIZING ISSUES

At times, some issues may arise after the galvanizing process. However, it is important to note these rarely affect the corrosion-resistance property of the galvanizing.

1. Welding Seepage

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

The gaps that are inside pinholes of welding slags or between welded parts allows for pre-treatment fluids to be trapped inside.

The reacted product of these fluids, moisture and steel may seep out and leave a trail on the material.

2. Uneven discolouration

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

The reaction of zinc varies with different elements in the steel. In general, the higher the silicon content of the steel, the darker the appearance of the galvanized coating.

The areas where mechanical works may also be a cause, for example, areas of the bend in rolled steels may be a different shade.

3. Drossing pimples

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

Drossing pimples are the product of iron particles in the bath that react in the zinc kettle, and gets adhered to the surface in the galvanizing process.

It is important to note that this does not affect the quality of galvanizing.
